FAQ
1. How can you tell whether you need a sworn translation?
If you are explicitly asked to provide one;
If it is an official document intended for a Belgian or foreign public authority;
If you want to ensure that the text has been translated in full and accurately, and wish to protect yourself against potential translation errors.
2. What are the two types of sworn translation?
1. Sworn translations for private purposes (for example, for individuals, companies and notaries, as well as for lawyers when the assignment does not fall within a judicial context).
Rates are generally higher than for a non-sworn translation, as the translator must have a good knowledge of the relevant case law and may sometimes need to consult a legal professional. This type of translation also requires more formatting work, as source texts are generally provided in paper form.
2. Sworn translations for judicial purposes (for example, for Belgian courts and tribunals, as well as for the police and lawyers working under the legal aid system).
Rates are fixed and determined by the judicial authorities.
